(Birmingham, AL / July 21, 2016) Baker Donelson has been recognized by the Alabama State Bar as the recipient of the 2016 Alabama State Bar Pro Bono Award in the law firm/group category. The Firm was presented with the award during the organization's annual meeting held in June.
The Alabama State Bar recognized Baker Donelson for the more than 20,000 pro bono hours contributed by its Alabama attorneys over the last five years, the majority of which have been devoted to civil advice and litigation on behalf of indigent Alabama citizens. The Firm has supported the state's Volunteer Lawyers Program and has also been involved in litigation involving violations of civil rights in Alabama's prison system and elsewhere.
"We are truly honored to be recognized by the Alabama State Bar, which has been vital in creating opportunities for those in the legal profession to provide assistance in their local communities," said Andy Rotenstreich, managing shareholder of Baker Donelson's Birmingham office.
Through its commitment to pro bono representation, Baker Donelson provides legal services to groups and individuals likely to be marginalized in the legal system due to economic barriers. Over the years, the Firm's attorneys have provided a variety of counsel to many populations, including immigrants, refugees, the elderly and the impoverished. Baker Donelson's efforts include work on a wide range of matters, such as advocating for the homeless and organizations that serve the homeless, death penalty litigation, providing corporate legal services to non-profit organizations and much more.
