Creating a great work environment in a law firm takes more than talent. It has more to do with communicating a clear vision of the firm and promoting ways for the staff to come together as a team. Baker Donelson was among five law firms ranked in Fortune magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For" list in March. Mr. Adams notes that Baker Donelson has initiatives to channel employees' positive energy, including offering paid time off for community service and letting employees donate unused paid time off to help co-workers cope with a personal or family crisis.
"We try to help people when they are in a ditch in life," Adams said. "Because our business is a demanding, time-sensitive occupation and it's very stressful, it requires teamwork. … When everyone is pulling to work together, it creates a more enjoyable environment to work in."
