A federal lawsuit filed in Nashville recently accuses a private probation company in Rutherford County of extorting low-income and disabled people for the company's – and county's – financial gain. The class-action civil rights lawsuit was filed by the legal advocacy group Equal Justice Under Law and Baker Donelson. In this Tennessean article, Jonathan Cole, who is representing the plaintiffs, notes that this problem is not only in Rutherford County, but elsewhere in the United States.
"We're really concerned about what's been going on in Rutherford County," said Mr. Cole.
