The European Union's (EU's) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) went into effect on May 25, 2018. This law provides a far-reaching and formidable regulatory scheme that governs the processing and handling of personal data. Among other things, the law mandates a well-documented compliance framework with top-down accountability and provides for individual rights of action, as well as the potential for extremely high administrative fines for noncompliance (up to the greater of €20 million, or 4 percent of total worldwide annual turnover).
U.S.-based employers with operations in the EU or employees in the EU (irrespective of citizenship) should be evaluating whether and how the law applies to human resource functions. Join us for a discussion addressing how the GDPR applies to U.S. employers and some of the basic requirements of the law. We will also address top questions we have been getting from employers and general tips for compliance.
