How the Lunch Counter Sit-ins of 1960 Remade American Civil Rights Law

Diversity Speaker Series Event

Join us for a special month-long series of conversations celebrating Black History Month, highlighting historic and current black leaders and their journeys to success, particularly women of color. Our initial speaker, Professor Chris Schmidt, will discuss his book on the historic sit-ins, and subsequent speakers will discuss their role models, how they have used their experiences to empower and give voice to their communities, and how racial differences continue to influence each of us.

Professor Chris Schmidt will discuss his book, The Sit-Ins: Protest and Legal Change in the Civil Rights Era, which tells the story of the 1960 student lunch counter protests and the national debate they sparked over the meaning of the constitutional right of all Americans to equal protection of the law.
