Baker Donelson shareholder Gary Herschman has received the Patricia T. Meador Leadership Award from the American Health Law Association (AHLA). The award was presented during the AHLA annual Fraud and Compliance Forum in Washington, D.C., on September 23.
Presented annually, the Patricia T. Meador Leadership Award recognizes an AHLA member volunteer who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment and dedication to fraud and compliance education and mentoring. Established by AHLA's Fraud and Abuse Practice Group in honor of the late Patricia T. Meador, an AHLA Fellow, the award recognizes individuals whose leadership and service have made a meaningful impact on the health law profession. Recipients are selected based on their contributions to fraud and compliance education, mentorship, and support of AHLA's educational mission.
With more than 30 years of experience, Mr. Herschman advises health care providers, physician groups, hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, investors, and other industry participants on mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions, joint ventures, affiliations, and other strategic transactions. He serves as co-chair of Baker Donelson's Health Care Transactions Team and frequently writes and speaks on developments affecting the health care industry. His longstanding involvement with AHLA includes service as vice chair of its Fraud & Abuse Practice Group from 2011 – 2017 and chair from 2017 – 2018.

Although primarily a health care transactions attorney, Mr. Herschman also has an in-depth understanding of federal and state fraud and abuse laws and other regulations governing health care providers, and he has applied that experience in successfully structuring and closing many mergers, joint ventures, affiliations, and other transactions throughout the health care industry.
Mr. Herschman is consistently recognized by leading legal industry publications and rankings, including Chambers USA, The Best Lawyers in America®, and New Jersey Super Lawyers. He earned his J.D. from The George Washington University Law School, where he served as an editor of The George Washington Law Review, and received his B.A., summa cum laude, from Lafayette College.
