Baltimore is a major city in Maryland with a long history as an important seaport. It is also the home of Ober|Kaler, a highly-regarded firm that became part of Baker Donelson in January 2017. The combination resulted in the third largest and most dynamic health practice in the country.

Since 1903, Ober|Kaler shared – and contributed to – the prosperity and history of the Mid-Atlantic region. Headquartered in Baltimore's downtown business district with the world-famous Inner Harbor as our backdrop, Ober|Kaler began with the practices of Albert C. Ritchie and Stuart S. Janney, two attorneys whose legacies are remembered today. Ritchie was elected governor of Maryland in 1920 and returned to the firm after an unprecedented four terms in office. After World War I, Frank B. Ober and Robert W. Williams joined the firm, which was then renamed Ritchie, Janney, Ober & Williams.

In 1969, the merger of Ober, Williams & Grimes, as the firm was then known, with Cross, Shriver, Bright & Washburne doubled our size and resulted in a new name: Ober, Grimes & Shriver. The period between 1969 and 1990 marked a time of moderate but deliberate growth in the number of lawyers at the firm, including a 1983 merger with an established Washington, D.C. practice that brought a national presence in tax, administrative, regulatory and corporate law, and provided essential new resources for the nationally expanding firm. In 2003, the firm sent its second governor to Annapolis, as Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. became the 60th governor of the State of Maryland.

Today, Baker Donelson's Baltimore-based health, litigation, business, construction and finance practices are among the most prominent in the United States. The office's 100-plus attorneys continue their vision of client service and our core values of quality, integrity, respect and commitment to our communities.

In 2022, the Baltimore office launched The Light of Baltimore Incubator at Baker Donelson, a partnership with Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses, to support HopkinsLocal businesses and other area local small businesses. As part of the program, Baker Donelson donated the entire 23rd floor of its Baltimore office to a diverse group of 30 small Baltimore businesses in a wide variety of industries.

Office Services Coordinator - Baltimore

Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell, & Berkowitz, PC has an opening for a full-time Office Services Coordinator in its Baltimore, MD office.  The ideal candidate will be extremely professional, possess exceptional communication and organizational skills as well as excellent computer skills, and have a proficiency in MS Outlook and basic typing skills.  

Responsibilities include Hospitality Services (assisting with events - ordering food, setting up, cleaning up; inventory of pantry items; stocking kitchens);  Reception (answering phones, greeting clients and visitors, maintaining neatness of lobby/reception area and conference rooms); Facilities (assisting with small office moves, preparing offices for new employees, keeping office supply areas stocked); Mail Services (metering, sorting, distributing mail); Copy Services (copy, print, scan projects); Assist with other clerical duties as assigned as well as with special projects.

Qualifications Include:

Basic knowledge of office equipment, including computer and copiers; Microsoft program knowledge- Outlook, Word, Excel, etc. Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate and follow instruction of attorneys and staff and provide information with extraordinary courtesy and tact. Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints. Confidentiality. Exceptional client service skills. Working effectively within a group or independently.

Legal Support Assistant - Baltimore

Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell, & Berkowitz, PC has an opening for a Legal Support Assistant in its Baltimore, MD office. The ideal candidate will have administrative experience, be extremely professional, possess exceptional communication, organizational and computer skills, have strong proficiencies in MS Word, Outlook and Excel, and the ability to work effectively within a group or independently.  Candidate should type a minimum of 55 words per minute with high accuracy.  This position will provide support to both attorneys and staff.  In addition, the candidate should be detail-oriented and able to multi-task and work well in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities include:  Prepares expense reports & check requests; assists with client bills; prepares and maintains client and other files both in electronic and paper filing systems; processes expenses and check requests; provides services, such as duplication, printing, scanning, mailing; liaises with third party vendors to coordinate services; performs data entry; schedules and coordinates meetings and conferences and handles other related details; coordinates and schedules travel arrangements; assists with the preparation of legal correspondence, pleadings, memos, reports, forms and other legal documents; helps with the opening of new clients & matters; maintains various calendars; assists attorneys and others in preparation for hearings, mediations, arbitrations and trials; handles other clerical/administrative duties as assigned; assists with special projects; may provide back-up help as needed with general office services.

The associate will advise clients on emerging privacy considerations and issues, draft policies and data protection addendum, and provide general privacy counseling. Legal Research Analyst - Nashville, Atlanta, Baltimore or Washington, D. C.

The position will be responsible for providing reference and expert research services firm-wide under general supervision and according to Firm policies and procedures. The Firm office locations of Nashville, Atlanta, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. are preferred; however, additional Firm office locations may be considered.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential functions are primarily job duties that incumbents must be able to perform unassisted or with some reasonable accommodation made by the employer.

  • Demonstrates the ability to work efficiently, maintain high productivity, and consistently deliver a reasonable volume of quality work within established deadlines.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • High school diploma required. BA, MLS and/or JD desired.
  • 3+ years of legal reference and research experience with deep and broad knowledge of legal materials and databases used to support the firm's vast array of practice areas and jurisdictions.
  • Proficient in legal research databases and software programs to include, but not limited to Westlaw Precision, Lexis+, Wolters Kluwer-VitalLaw, Bloomberg Law, PACER, Courthouse News Service, Checkpoint RIA, HeinOnline, Drafting Assistant, Accurint, Quest and TLO amongst others required.
  • Professional interpersonal skills required in order to communicate and follow instructions effectively and provide information with ordinary courtesy and tact.
  • Customer service focused.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple competing requests and demands, providing high level of customer service and maintaining a professional demeanor at all times.
